A scorpion was a small machine used to fire projectiles resembling medieval crossbow bolts. It was extremely precise and effective, so enemies were often terrified by its presence on the battlefield.
For a war machine, the scorpion was small and light, and therefore easy to transport - which is why each Roman legion had approximately 60 of them. Scorpions could be operated by a single person and were incredibly effective at close range.
It was characterized by extremely high accuracy - hitting a man-sized target at about 100 meters, and from that distance, a projectile fired, approximately 1 meter long, penetrated shields or armor.
